Anyone have any advice OR tidbits for cleaning an iMac? We've had ours for almost two-months. I have used our little black microfiber that came in the box, but I am wondering if there is another way to clean the screen.
Not that I've been using it on the new iMac screen, but does anyone know exactly why a glass cleaner like Windex with ammonia is not recommended? I've been using that on the old G3 with no ill effects for many years. How Is the glass for the new iMacs different and why would using it on those be harmful?
Even though household cleaners like Windex are fairly diluted solutions, ammonia is a corrosive and it attacks copper, zinc alloys, rubber and certain plastics.
No mention of glass there. Do you think they are concerned it may reach and attack the aluminum nearby? Or could it be the new screens are a special formulation vulnerable to the ammonia in some way?
Might speed up the oxidation of the aluminum or worse sense not all glass is bullet proof, some applications have highly specialized coatings that can be damaged by improper cleaning.
Coatings. Yes, thanks, I think that's probably it. In that case, at least for small, stubborn spots, I wonder if a good camera lens cleaner formulated to be harmless to lens coatings would be safe?
The "Everything Mac" book that came with the machine says to dampen a soft, lint-free cloth with water and wipe the screen. You're not supposed to spray anything directly on the screen. I've used the little black cloth and it seems to work. My local Apple Reseller suggested using a micro-fiber cloth. I purchased one but I haven't used it yet/
Do not waste your money on any magic clean screen cleaners.
Simply take a micro fibre cloth submerge in luke warm water and a bit of washing up liquid, rinse and clean. Then dry off withe a dry cloth. Done. Smear free shines all round.
Also good for doing the keyboard too. Spray a bit of ant bacterial spray on to make it nice and safe or repeat the above with baby sterilising liquid.
