Can I return or exchange for credit my unused gifted pencil for iPad?

I got an ipencil for Christmas and recently saved enough for an iPad. I called customer service, because I couldn't get the pencil to work. Come to find out the newest iPad and newest pencil are incompatible with eachother. I asked if there was anything I can do to resolve the issue and the rep told me no. It's been more than 14 days, that i can't return or exchange the pencil. That I am stuck with the pencil, and could either get a whole different iPad or buy a new pen and that was it. They definitely made sure to go out of their way to point out how ignorant I am and that this is all my fault that I didn't do enough research into their products. That all the information is publicly displayed, and then they hung up on me

Is there really is no way I can exchange this unused pen for even like a credit?? I spent hundreds of dollars on these products only to be called stupid for doing so and hung up on. Welcome to apple I guess.
