How many amps does my MacBook Air (M1, 2020) need when charging?

Your model MacBook Air uses a 30W power adapter: About Mac power adapters - Apple Support.


It does not require all 30W just to charge. The battery's charging rate will diminish as less power is provided to it, and as the battery reaches its maximum state of charge that rate becomes limited by both hardware and software design considerations.


To answer your question, the required current is a function of the power adapter's voltage, which is permitted to vary according to the USB-C industry standard. Refer to USB Charger (USB Power Delivery) for an explanation.
