Q: in-ear headphones w remote and mic

Hi All,
I bought the in-ear headphones w/ mic 6 months ago and I have LOVED them. However, shortly after the iOS 4 update, they have stopped working (other than sound). Is it the iOS 4 update that is causing the problem? Now all I can do is listen to sound coming out of them. Before, I could use all the functions – up, down, skip, replay, microphone – now none of these functions work. Can anyone please tell me what they think I should do or if I pressed something wrong in settings? Also, if I need to send them back to Apple, how do I do that? The website won't accept the UPC/SN of them for repair/return. Please help me, I am so sad I don't want to spend another 80 bucks.

Thank you very much, Margo

have you tried using the in-ear headphones w remote and mic on another iOS device? is so do they work?

you can always book an appointment for an apple store genius bar. http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ they should be able to figure out if it's the device or the headphones.

Apple Accessories have a one year limited warranty. If it is the headphones they should be able to replacement for you. Long as they're not damaged.

My remote is also not working as a matter of fact the pause center button works, and the mic works but the + & - buttons do nothing I wish I could turn the volume up or down on the fly but they stopped working.

One time I yanked the wire pretty bad and sound was bad for a while then I yanked it back into place so that could have caused problems but it's weird everything work other then the volume control on the remote, and other users are saying it's due to an update or something.

I would like more information on this does anyone know why the volume buttons would not work but every other function of the iPod works great?

Same problem here. I've already changed my earphones with the Replacement Program about 4 months ago, after the update to iOs4 here it comes the problem again. The only things that work is the Pause and Forward button, no volume, no mic......APPLEEEE !!!!!!! I'm tired of this, are you becoming like Microsoft!?!

I just bought the iphone 4 today and my ear phones do not work... The button does nothing and you can only hear the background music and the lyrics sound like someone underwater is the best way to explain it? Did anyone else find a fix for these? 5 hours old!!!!

I think I have the solution : a simple PAPERCLIP ! Just clean the audio port with a paperclip before plugging the headphones again. Eventually, you'll find a chunk of lint like this one : http://www.flickr.com/photos/starkoss/5143078151/sizes/l/in/set-7215762518070160 9/

For me it worked ! And I've earned a brand new in-ear headphone set, because my Apple Store changed it, thinking that my device was broke

By the way, thanks to Gary (from www.iphoneincanada.ca) for giving me the original idea (http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/tips-tricks/how-to-fix-your-iphone-headphones-mic-i f-its-not-working/)

    anyone w/ the same problem?

Hi all - I am also having issues with the in-ear headphones that were supplied with my iPhone 3GS. I have had my iPhone for just under a year and since updating the software, I can no longer use the mic button to change tracks or adjust the volume on my songs. I have tried a brand new pair of in-ear headphones and this problem is still happening. I tried both pair of headphones on my Ipad and strangely I CAN adjust the volume and swap songs etc on my iPad, but not on my iPhone. After reading the forums, Im happy to see that others are also expericing this problem and it's not just me. I found this link - http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/tips-tricks/how-to-fix-your-iphone-headphones-mic-i f-its-not-working/

I used a pin to clear any unwanted lint or crap that may of ended up inside the phone via the phone jack - but this has not helped. I hope that Apple are aware of this problem and fix this with a new software update. It's very annoying!

Me too....worked fine until the update to 4.2.1. Both Apple in-ear headphones and third-party headphones only play audio, with no remote control functions. On the supplied earbuds (which don't fit my ears all that well), remote works fine. My guess is a software issue which I hope they resolve in the next update.

Since the Jan 7 Software Update containing the Mac App Store, my white earbuds with mic no longer work as a microphone on my MacBook!

Output still works, but input, which used to work flawlessly, is dead.

I've been having the same problem - sound but no function control with the buttons. I bought a new set of in-ear headphones and still had the problem. I was about to schedule a repair for my iPhone4 but thought I'd check here first... i checked for lint with a needle and then tapped the phone on the desktop to dislodge anything that might be in the jack - a little bit of sand/grit came out! Tried the headphones again and they work! I love this discussion board. Thanks.
