My Gmail will not work after the Monterey OS upgrade. Nothing seems to work to get it to automatically retrieve messages. My iPhone and iPad are working getting email. What are the steps to get it going?

I’ve had to post this answer several times this week.
Gmail requires an app specific password to work with the Apple mail app.

Try going to Mail Preferences -> Accounts and uncheck the Enable this Account for your Gmail. Then try adding it back in. If that works, remove the old one.
In Mail app, click the Mail drop down menu and click Preferences or press CMD+Comma while Mail has focus.
I believe you only need an App Password if you turned on Multi-Factor Auth with Google or if you cannot reach a Sign in with Google popup browser window. But regardless, this is the symptom, when you cannot login to Gmail it is quite possible you require an App Password.
Do you mean system preferences? I don't see Mail preferences.
