Apps in alphabetized order

Why doesn’t my iphone alphabetize my apps? Not just on HOME screen but all screens. Just ANOTHER reason I should have stayed with Android.

iPhone 13, iOS 15

Often times, while browsing, etc. an app fires up that I have turned off the cellular network for. I go to Settings > Cellular to turn Cellular on for that app. Here’s where the prob is: the long list of apps (140) are all jumbled up and not listed alphabetically. I have no idea what “user experience” Apple is targeting. It’s not consistent either because the apps in Privacy/Location are all ordered alphabetically!

The list has 2 sections. Any apps that have used cellular data since the last reset of cellular usage statistics will appear first, sorted in descending order of cellular data use. After that apps that have use no cellular data since the last reset will be listed in alphabetical order. You can force them all to be in alphabetical order by resetting statistics.

You phone has an alphabetical list of apps in the App Library (the last page of the Home screen). You can also go to Settings/General/Transfer or Reset Phone/Reset/Reset Home Screen Layout. This will put the built in apps in their default locations on the first page of the Home screen, and arrange your added apps in alphabetical order. You will find that most people don’t was their apps in alphabetical order, however; they want them organized in convenient groups and folders so they can be found easily, as I have done with my 310 apps.

A suggestion for a basic item like sorting alphabetically is ridiculous. Who designed this stuff??? Very disappointed moving to iPhone from Samsung Android.

Go to the App Library (the last page of the Home screen) and tap on the Search field. You will see a list of apps in alphabetical order.

And this doesn’t prevent you from organizing apps any other way you want, in folders, by type or whatever. You have the best of both worlds, personal choice and an alphabetical list.

No, it's very pragmatic advice. If the tool you have doesn't meet your needs, you should get a different one rather than

Go to the top level of Settings and go down to the alphabetical listing of apps instead.

No one here in this user-to-user technical support forum would be able to do anything other than speculate as to why Apple has never made this an option. Nor does Apple read here for suggestions or feedback. However, you can let them know your thoughts here:

This is a response received from Apple.

”Go to the App Library (the last page of the Home screen) and tap on the Search field. You will see a list of apps in alphabetical order.”

Yes, that shows them sorted alphabetically. Does not fix the total messy display of all the screens. So the real answer is, we only place applications down in install order and you are stuck to searching. Sorting, a basic function even in DOS 3, is not available. Whoever came up with this, I cannot imagine what their office looks like. My filing cabinets are sorted alphabetically. Sometimes by category and alphabetically inside of that. If you use a paper filing system or electronic, it should all work the same. It really is not that difficult in programming.

If you are referring to my post that is not a response from Apple. This is a user to user forum.

You can arrange the pages of the Home screens any way you want. Just hold your finger on any icon until they all wriggle, and you can move apps around to your heart’s content, including creating folders for related apps.

Alphabetical organization is absolutely the WORST way to arrange apps; I can’t imaging why I would want my 300 apps arranged alphabetically rather than by type of function they perform.

I will respond to your post in two appropriate sections based on your comments.

(1) I believe that OP received the correct responses including the suggestion/option to choose another cell iPhone with a different operating system that provides the sought after feature out of the box. OP was provided with solutions as well. These are user to user forums made up of folks just like you and me. I believe there was appropriate attention and empathy provided to OP in the responses that OP had received. This is just my opinion on this.

(2) You are correct, the apps appearing under Settings ➡️ Cellular are not listed in Alphabetical Order. They are listed in priority by the amount of data the app(s) has used. The higher data usage app goes on top. The amount of data usage is also listed below the app(s).

This is a user-to-user forum. Apple does not participate except to provide canned answers to posts that have had no response from other users for 24 hours. If you want an answer from Apple use the Get Support link at the top of this page. And if you want to suggest a change to Apple use→Apple - Support - iPhone - Mail

Originally the Settings/Cellular list was alphabetical, but they received a huge number of complaints in both the forum and the above link that it was difficult to impossible to find the apps that were using the most data. Their solution was what you see now. Although an improvement might be a switch to choose between the 2 views. Something to suggest.

My suggestion was helpful competitive analysis toward innovation and the response was dont make suggestions.

No, the response was "suggestions made here won't get to Apple, the only people who can make the change". If you want Apple to know what you want, use the feedback page:

Product Feedback - Apple

Even if Apple does decide to implement that suggestion, it may not be for a long time. So, in the interim, your choices are to continue using a device that doesn't meet your needs and continue to be frustrated and annoyed or buy something that makes you happier. Which thing you decide to do is entirely up to you.
