iMac freezing; ran EtreCheck

My iMac is freezing and running slower and slower. I reset the PRAM/NVRAM, booted up in Safe Mode and ran Apple Diagnostic Test (no problems). It helped for a bit. I read that I should run EtreCheck, so I did. I'm not sure now quite what to do. Thanks! Jane

The best antivirus, cleaning app, and overall maintenance app for Mac OS is Mac OS itself. All you need to do with Mac OS to keep it secure and running well is to keep it up-to-date and do periodic (about 1x per week) restarts. Other than that, leave it alone. Adding third party antivirus, cleaning, security and other types of maintenance apps to Mac OS adds no additional level of security. The only thing these apps do is have the opposite affect users want. They make Mac OS slow, unstable, generate odd behavior (much like you are experiencing) and make Mac OS appear buggy.

Please locate the developers uninstall instructions for AdGuard & Kapersky and follow to the letter. Then restart in Safe Mode per the directions in Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac and then restart normally.

I strongly suspect these apps are the root of your problem.

In addition, your report indicates you have not used Time Machine to back up in 10 days, please keep your Time Machine External Hard Disk connected at all times so Time Machine should act as it should and backup hourly.

Finally, your report indicates you still have Adobe Flash installed, Adobe has advised you for 2 years to uninstall Flash as the product is dead. Please navigate to Adobe's website and find their uninstall utility.

Wow! When I worked in law enforcement, we called this a "clue":

Top Processes Snapshot by CPU:

Process (count) CPU (Source - Location)

kav 25.76 % (Kaspersky Lab UK Limited) ⚠️

MailStorageManagement 25.58 % (Apple)

EtreCheckPro 20.62 % (Etresoft, Inc.)

deleted 16.50 % (Apple)

mdsync 15.84 % (Apple)

Kaspersky, a package banned from use in government offices by several countries due to security concerns, has a single component gobbling up ONE-QUARTER of your CPU cycles at the time of testing!!!

Your Fusion drive is underperforming on the Write speed side:

Performance:

System Load: 1.93 (1 min ago) 2.22 (5 min ago) 2.91 (15 min ago)

Nominal I/O speed: 46.49 MB/s

File system: 27.47 seconds

Write speed: 300 MB/s ⚠️

Read speed: 2749 MB/s

I collect Etrecheck drive reports and the slowest healthy Fusion drive in that data set is writing at 500 MB/sec. Removing the unneeded software may improve that. Run Etrecheck agina after evicting all the fearware to see if the write speed increases

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn't know I AdGuard was in there. I think I deinstalled it. I deinstalled the Kapersky but when I went to the folders to see what might be associated with it, I had no clue. I plugged my Time Machine back in and got rid of Flash. So the next few days will tell if all the deinstalling, restarting, etc. will make a difference. I hope so! Should I run EtreCheck again to see if I get a different report? Thanks so much!!
