Add to cellular account

is it possible to add a ipad to cellular data to Xfinity mobile plan? I recently purchased ipad with cellular from friend and took it to my Xfinity mobile store today and they told me it can’t be added to my account. I can use under Wi-Fi but can’t put on my data plan. Anyone know anything about this?
