why is my MacBook Air mirroring on off

Why is off the only option for Apple Airplay on my MacBook Pro?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.13

The AirPlay drop down menu in the menu bar would search the local network for AirPlay destination devices when the menu is accessed. When it finds no connectable devices, it would just say “AirPlay: Off”. When if finds connectable devices, it would list them below that.

AirPlay destination devices are: Apple TV box, or select third party devices, or newer Macs (with macOS Monterey).

AirPlay must be activated on the receiving device, or it will not allow connecting.

AirPlay 2-destination devices may require macOS Mojave 10.14.5 or later.


Use AirPlay to stream video or mirror the screen of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

If screen mirroring or streaming isn't working on your AirPlay-compatible device - Apple Support
