My software update keeps circling for hours with 'checking for updates'. What do I do?

My software update keeps circling for hours with 'checking for updates'. What do I do?
Follow the advise from previous poster first.
IMHO - the Software Update Applet has and remains somewhat buggy at best.
That said - from the Terminal Application run the below command with Quotation Marks. It will bypass the normal method and connect directly to the Apple Servers.
It will Only Look for Full Versions of installers this computer Qualifies to run.
" softwareupdate --list-full-installers "
What is the output of this command ?
Does it report anything or does it never finish looking ?
Try safe-boot.
