Apple Authorized Reseller asking for my Apple ID Password

Hi Everyone.

This weekend I dropped my beloved iPhone 12 Pro Max on the floor, and despite the excellent QuadLock Case I'm using, one of the camera lenses on the back of the phone was cracked. (They do protrude quite a bit).

So I went on the Apple Website to schedule a repair. Luckily for me I do have AppleCare+ Coverage.

None of the Apple Store had slots available, so I picked one of the Authorised service centers. Apparently, it's the same service/policy.

I left the device for repair. I was informed that the cost with the AppleCare+ coverage would still be 99€. (no such thing as a free lunch).

2 things I find a bit weird.

  • The guy did ask me to write down my device passcode on the repair order form he had printed. (I did it, since according to him there was no way Apple's technician could do the repair without it).
  • A day later, he emailed, and asked me for my Apple ID password. And this despite the fact that I had removed the "find my iphone" feature on the device before handing it over to him.

This sounds weird and almost a non-legit request. What do you think? Does this make sense? Would you share your Apple ID Password to a third party (in this case one of the Authorized Apple Service Center?).

Looking forward to your feedback, and insights.

Thanks,

iPhone 12 Pro Max

Asking for the passcode is normal. I wasn't asked for my Apple ID password. Theoretically if anything needs to be wiped, they should be able to do it regardless of passcode or Apple ID status. Apple actually recommends that a device be backed up, then reset to factory condition before servicing, although most people don't do it. I personally changed my passcode to something simple, and when I got it back I changed it back to my familiar one.

There's a good chance that they'll actually replace your iPhone, but it might be possible to repair just the part now.

Thanks,

In this case, my Phone is fully backed up on iCloud.

I wonder if they are about to give me a new device, and the guy wants the passcode in order to recycle the phone for someone else? one of the lenses is cracked but the device is still fully functional.

No. If it's a full exchange where it's recycled or refurbished, none of that really matters. They can wipe it with or without a passcode. What they can't do is recover data without a passcode.

A passcode is generally required in order to test a "same device" repair for correctness. Have no idea what an Apple ID is needed for. As long as it's already logged in there should be no need. They should be able to bypass Activation Lock too as long as it's to restore to factory new condition.

Thanks all, for confirming my initial point of view. I of course declined the request to share my Password.

Is there a way to share this (and maybe even forward the email) to Apple for them to investigate the behavior of their Official / Authorized reseller/Service provider? I was expecting the same level of service as at an Apple Store.
