After syncing my laptop iTunes library to my phone, I now have many duplicates on the phone. How did this happen and how do I delete them?

While we can't determine what exactly happened, the best thing to do is reset the sync history in iTunes on your laptop with your iPhone and try syncing again:
iTunes Preferences (Or if on Windows, Edit) > Devices > Reset Sync History
