I understand. Apple calls that feature "Sidecar":

To clarify, the M1 MacBook Air can AirPlay to supported devices, and it can also act as an AirPlay receiver. However, your iPad cannot act as an AirPlay receiver.
That said, you can use Sidecar to mirror your Mac's screen to your iPad. For more details: Use an iPad as a second display for a Mac - Apple Support
