Letter key repeat doesn't work, character repeat does work

Hello, I have a new MacBook Pro M1 with Monterey. I noticed the delete key was not quickly deleting. I researched and saw apple>systems preferences>keyboard>keyboard key repeat slider. I set is for faster and the delete key worked great. But I noticed the letters were not repeating at all. I tried the characters and they all quickly repeat. But not the letters.

Any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated! Thank you!

Letters have not repeated in MacOS by default for 10 years or so. Instead many letters should produce a popup menu with accented characters.

To turn off the popup menus and get repeat back, you can try

open Terminal and type

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool false

and then restart.
