Plugged in non-sleeping MacBook Pro backup drive "improperly disconnected"

When I open the lid and log into a MacBook Pro that's been idle for a while, I get messages that the external backup drive has been improperly disconnected. Energy system setting when plugged in is set to not sleep.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.6

Hey rwzpv,

We understand your drive is "improperly disconnecting" while your Mac is sleeping. We'd be happy to help.

To get started, it's very possible that your external drive is hibernating after being away from it for a long time while your Mac is sleeping. We'd suggest checking the documentation or else reaching out to the manufacturer to check if this might be the case.

You'll also need to make sure that "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" isn't enabled in your Energy Saver settings under Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Energy Saver. For more info, check out: Change Energy Saver preferences on a Mac desktop computer

We hope this information helps out.

Take care.

This happens when my MBP is "docked" at home with power, the external drive, a mouse, and ethernet connected.

When docked, my Mac is set to allow network access, to not sleep nor to let the drives sleep so backups can occur.

The external drive is continuously connected to power through a UPS.

The MBP screen saver activates after being idle for a time, requiring entering the password to use.
