Activation Required while IPAD was in use?

For some reason out of the blue my old IPAD 2 was asked to be activated? And now is stuck in loop of activating where by it comes up with "activation server is temporarily unavailable"?

Apple why is this happening?

It is very infuriating and wasting my time and goodwill.

It seems Apple wants to torment its customers or is just incompetent?

I did a hard rest but it insists that Activation is required on my poor old IPAD 2 which i have been using without issue (or at least until Apple corp meddled in).

I am reluctant to wipe out IPAD given i can't use to back it up because it is in this crazy Apple loop.

So any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, Martin

Thanks for your help.

The Activation Lock is not set up on any of my devices.

I tried again by connecting my IPAD to my MacBook and though it too failed, the next time i tried i tried the activation through the Wi-Fi option it progressed past the "can't find server" step.

And eventually managed to activate my iPad...

Either the "Trust" acknowledgement when connected to to my macBook or the activation server simply was miraculously found caused it to work?

And also suspect it asking for the "activation" may be related to some general Apple update although the iPad 2 was not updated for many years?

Go figure?

It is back to normal and i do not have to shell out any $$$ for a new device.
