An error occurred while downloading a larger version of this photo for editing. Please try again later.

I am running Catalina on my imac when I try to export or edit a photo in Photos the above error happens I have thousands of pictures on my imac and this issue has only happened since I upgraded to Catalina I can view the pictures ok but I cant transfer or export to my desktop this will be a major problem for me if I cant share my images I do not use icloud to store images they are all on my hard drive and backed up with Time Machine

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.


From your description of the error, it sounds like iCloud Photos is enabled. Can you check Photos > Preferences > iCloud.


Did you ever use iCloud Photos in the past and switch it off? If you did, was Optimize Storage on?
