Cannot restore Monterey system back to Catalina from TM
I upgraded from Catalina to Monterey from TM and the restore goes into an unending preparing disk phase, unending meaning hours. What is happening during this preparing phase?
thanks

Did you allow Monterey to backup to that Catalina Time Machine disk, or was the Catalina TM disk set aside and not reused?
Okay so I just realized that when I go to select a backup the Restore From has a drop down which shows a Data volume with the Monterey versions. I seem to remember the disk configuration had a container and a Data volume in it. I cannot seem to be able to recreate that configuration in the Disk Utility.
I have successfully done full restores going all the way back to Lion. This is totally ****’d up (excuse the language). I have been at this for 2 days. I would have stayed with the Monterey OS but the dock kept crashing and sometimes Finder wouldn’t launch so I wanted to go back to a stable system.
Okay, this is strange, the Monterey version was backed up. But now when I go to choose a backup only the Catalina backups are listed.
Now if I try to restore a Monterey version I get a message I must use Migration assistant. Well, if I had a working system I might try that.
