Apple Mail won't connect to browser to update passwords - help

AppleMail/Google says I need to re-enter a password to use a mail account. Neither going in through Apple Mail nor through System Preferences will open the browser to allow me to do that. I checked that I have my default browser set to Safari (someone suggested not having that done was the issue in another thread) and I still only get a spinning wheel and no connection. My options are 'open Safari" which is grayed out while the wheel spins and spins and spins and never connects, and "cancel". I can go in through GoogleMail and access the account there, but I'd really rather be able to read it in Apple Mail as I have been doing for some time now.

Any suggestions? I am running Monterey 12.0.1 on an M1 chip MacBook Pro. AppleMail Version 15.0 (3693.20.0.1.32)

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 12.0

I figured it out. I had to *close* Safari so the idiot program could open it up again to authenticate the password. If Safari was already open, it had no clue what to do with it and just ground on unable to do anything forever.
