merging content to another computer

So if I am merging my macbook air to another device, do they have to be the same operating system?

Does migrating from an older Mac to a new Mac mean moving or copying files over? I want to migrate from an old MacBook Pro to a new MacBook Air. Will migrating actually move the files--or just create a copy on the new Mac (so that both computers have the same thing). My preference is that both computers would have the same files--thanks for your time! MV

No. You can migrate to a computer running a newer OS, and you can manually move files between OS versions.
