Using laptop and screen suddenly discolored/distorted. No drops, no accidents, no water.

So, my M1 MBA is just outside of it's 1 year warranty and suddenly this happens. I was just using my laptop and bam out of nowhere I get this screen distortion and I have no idea how or why.

Apple tells me there is nothing they can do. Has anyone else had this issue?

I now essentially have an $1100 paper weight that Apple wants $700 to fix even though I didn't do anything to it.

Hi Rambo,

First I'd immediately backup your important data.

I'd then suggest two things:

  • get an HDMI cable and monitor then hook it up. Use it as your main display, do you see the same issue on another monitor?
  • -If not it is your MBA display.
  • ----Only replaceable piece will be the ribbon cable that connects the SOC and Display. A repair shop could
  • -But if you do see it, it is not the monitor which likely means the SOC. For that I'd try a wipe to factory image (this is at least worth a try).

I wish I could give you better advice. Best of luck...

The M1 based MBA is extremely self contained. There are few interchangeable parts. But I know there is a ribbon cable that comes from the SOC to the Screen.

It's 100% a hardware issue. It's fine when I hook it up to an external monitor.

I just can't imagine Apple selling products that randomly fail after a year without any cause. I understand if I banged it or something but that didn't happen. It was fine one second and then just like this the next. I know I'm not the only one this has happened to since I've started researching but dang it feels bad.

I'm a student and I can't afford to buy a new laptop. I was expecting this $1100 laptop to get me through my final premed year and all of medical school but apparently I'll have to go another route. Never buying an apple product again thats for sure.
