It's one where you may have a device that's covered by AppleCare for a defect. Apple will send a replacement and with a temporary authorization against a credit card, along with a return box. Once the defective iPhone is returned, the temporary authorization is released. If it's not returned within a specified period, the credit card is then charged for the replacement cost.
