MacPro freezing on Monterey update. Downloaded, but will not boot up.

Last night I tried to update my MacPro (Intel chip) from Big Sur to Monterey. I knew it would take a while, so I started the process and then went to bed. When I woke up 9 hours later, I was surprised to see a black screen with a white Apple and a frozen progress bar.

I held down the power button to turn off the computer, and tried booting up in Recovery Mode. I ran Disk Repair on my hard drive--all good, no problems. I try Reinstalling OS Monterey from Recovery Mode, and the same thing happens--it downloads the installer, but when the computer restarts and tries to boot up and load the OS, it ends up frozen.

I *do* have CleanMyMac installed, and from peeking around these forums, that seems to be a consistent culprit for these kinds of issues--but unfortunately I can't get my computer booted up to remove it.

No matter what I seem to do, I keep hitting a brick wall. Any suggestions?

EDIT: Just tried resetting NVRAM because at this point I'm just throwing whatever I can at the problem. Didn't help--right back to the frozen progress bar.

Starting in Safe Mode doesn't seem to work either. It doesn't take me to a login screen--just back to the B&W installation screen where the progress bar freezes.

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, Chris. We understand you're having issues completing the install process for macOS. We'd be happy to provide information to help you address this.

You may need to revert to installing macOS Big Sur and then attempting to install the upgrade from there:How to reinstall macOS"Other macOS installation optionsWhen you install macOS from Recovery, you get the current version of the most recently installed macOS, with some exceptions:On an Intel-based Mac, you can use Shift-Option-Command-R during startup to be offered the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available. Or you can use Option-Command-Rduring startup to be offered either the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac, or in some cases the macOS that came with your Mac or the closest version still available. If the Mac logic board was just replaced, you might be offered only the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac.If you just erased your entire startup disk, you might be offered only the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available. You can also use these methods to install macOS, if the macOS is compatible with your Mac:Use the App Store to download and install the latest macOS or an earlier macOS.Use a USB flash drive or other secondary volume to create a bootable installer."

If you had a Time Machine backup while on macOS Big Sur, it would be best to transfer this data before upgrading to macOS Monterey again.

Let us know the results.Have a great day!
