Apple CarPlay Works for Other Apps, But Not Phone Calls

Hello everyone:

I recently purchased a 2019 Toyota Camry with Apple CarPlay enabled, and have been using it with minimal issues for the least few months (iPhone 12 with iOS15.3.1). I was using Spotify to listen to music and when I received a call and answered it via CarPlay, the no sound came from my car speakers. When I switched the iPhone to Speaker mode, I could clearly hear sound coming from my phone speakers, but when I switched back, again no sound came from my car speakers.

I hung up, and used both Apple Music and Spotify successfully - both working normally. It was only regular phone calls that weren't coming through my car speakers.

I unplugged and plugged the Lighting cable back into both my phone and the car several times, and also restarted the car - nothing seems to fix this phone call-specific issue.

Any help, tips, or advice?

Hi Aristogeiton1,

We have a link with some great steps If you need help with CarPlay. We recommend making sure you've tried everything below:

"Make sure that your iPhone has the latest version of iOS. If your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS, follow these steps — checking CarPlay after each step:

  1. Check your connection to your CarPlay stereo:
    • If you have a wired connection, try connecting again with a different USB cable to a different USB port if you have one.
    • If you have a wireless connection, make sure that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled under Settings > Wi-Fi and Settings > Bluetooth.
  1. If CarPlay doesn't activate automatically, look for the CarPlay logo on your car's display.
  2. Restart your iPhone and your car.
  3. Make sure that Siri is on.
  4. If your iPhone isn't detected by CarPlay, make sure that CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, tap Allowed Apps and make sure that CarPlay is enabled.
  5. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car, then tap Forget This Car. Then set up CarPlay again.
  6. Make sure that your CarPlay stereo is using the latest firmware from the car manufacturer. Check your car's manual for more information.

If you still have issues connecting to CarPlay, contact Apple Support."

If you've tried all of those steps and the issue persists, that's when we suggest using the link above to reach Apple directly.

Take care.
