can't t reset passcode for macbook

I forgot my password for my MacBook Air. The password hint didn’t help. So I am trying to reset it using my Apple ID. When I enter it I get the message in red “There was an error connecting to the”. That’s all it says. When I click on the wifi symbol at the top right it says I am connected to my network. What’s up?

Troubleshooting a Locked Mac:

Use Ethernet:

On the computer, you connect it through Ethernet, going directly into your router. For a Mac (or PC) that does not have Ethernet, this would be the adapter to use: Belkin USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter - Apple

Seeing the words: “There was an error connecting to the”., it seems as though the macOS install is corrupt. It should be a full message. So, what exactly does it read?

Please Provide a Photo:

Take a photos of this screen, and reply back with it attached. To attach it. use the first item-in from the far-right (looks like two mountains and a moon). The Link: Important: Blank out personal info from the photo, through use of the Photos app.

"can't t reset passcode for macbook: Unfortunately, I am on a trip and don’t have an Ethernet cable with me. Even if I did my router, actually a cellular hotspot, doesn’t have an Ethernet port."

Three Things:

A. Network Resources being Swollen:

If you are on a Trip, then it's probably the network you are using them. If a public LAN, then you may be using too much of their resources (in which case, they kick you right off the network, and you'd have to get a new ticket to log back in). Remember: There is only so much that Broadband can handle.

B. Wi-Fi Connection:

What's n the top-right cornet of the screen? Does it show that there is a network connection?

C. Using Ethernet:

If at a friend's house, you could you Ethernet through use of an adapter. Get one at your local retailer. Or, if there for weeks to come, then order one from Apple, and have it shipped there.

You are welcome.

Try my above reply. Seeing if it works for you.

Also... Wi-Fi Connection:

What's on the top-right corner of the screen? Does it show that there is a network connection?
