Time Machine backup fails; error message is "Backup Not Completed Time Machine could not back up to MyBook 4" (my new APFS formatted WD external drive). The drive was formatted using Disk Utility and then selected in Time Machine. Time Machine said it was doing backups for several weeks, but all backups were empty. Permissions seem to be set to read only. 27" iMac 2020.

Nope, I've already done all that. The problem seems to be that in following the Apple proceure, I end up with an unwriteable Time Machine backup disk. I could call Apple support, but I don't want to waste 2 hours.
