Adobe CC 2022 - Unable to open vector smart object from PS to Illustrator

***This is the exact post I wrote on Adobe Support Community forum. I think there is a chance that this could be an Apple error.

Hi everybody,

I'm having a bit of a problem, apparently when I double-click any vector smart object in PS, any Illustrator file that is, I get this message "The application Adobe Illustrator 2022.app can't be opened." code -1703

This message appears regardless if Illustrator is open or closed.

This thing happens regardless if I'm connected to VPN or not.

Situation

• mac OS Monterey 12.3;

• Creative Cloud Suite 2022;

• all apps are updated and there is only one instance of them running on this machine, I don't have any old photoshops or illustrators on it;

• my computer is from work, so everything is updated and clean;

• we login everyday thru a VPN, so we can access font servers, servers, etc.

Context

• the only thing happened these days is that, coming from the mother company, we removed SEP, Symantec Endpoint Protection

Since then, this error appeared, so far 🙂

Any ideas anyone? Is verrrry annoying to not be able to double-click a vector in photoshop and edited in illustrator.

I appreciate any answer, thank you good people 🙂

Thank you for your answer, yes I saw that the engineering team from Adobe responded quickly and apparently they're on to it.

Regarding roll back to previous versions, I just read on the same thread that some users allready did that and nothing happened, the problem is still there.

So, in the meantime, until it's fixed, I'm working with workarounds:

  • right click on the layer in question and "export content"
  • or, best, drag-n-drop that file on the Library panel (inside Photoshop) and just double click on it, it will open in Illustrator and, oh joy, once edited and saved, it will update automatically in Photoshop.

Thanks again for your help.

Until they fix it with another update I suggest to use two tricks that work:

1. For the embedded vector smart objects, go to SmartObject Properties, then hit the option 'covert to linked' > save some palce you want with extension *.ai. File restored. :)

When pasting the artwork from Illustrator:

2. Check the option „Add to my current library” while the vector artwork is pasted (as a 'smart object'). No problem to open/edit it via the Library panel then.

Good luck! Cezary.

There is NO combination of (older and newer) versions of Adobe PS and Ai that works. Which is why the suspicion is Apple broke something in Monterey. For anyone who recently got an M1 Mac studio they can't even reinstall an older version of MacOS.

This broke my workflow of years rendering hundreds of huge projects unusable. The only viable option is to export the embedded graphic as a separate file and use it as a linked asset, but aside from the inordinate amount of time this would require to do on all files and layers - literally hundreds daily - it's a file management nightmare as otherwise all assets are embedded into the one PSD file, instead of risking breaking links over network transfers.

This is a professional's nightmare and there is no ETA on this from either Apple or Adobe?!?!

Here is the best workaround I have found so far without having to file manage each psd:

Also this:

From Adobe: It's on the Apple side with a change in 12.3. We are working with them on it. Keep checking for macOS updates.

I have the same issue. Talk to Adobe without any solution, it seems the engineer is still working on it after almost 3weeks, talk to Apple and was ask to re-install OS or try running on safe mode.

It seems they are indirectly pointing fingers at each other. Can someone HELP? It really slow down my workflow to a snail pace. M1 Pro or Max or Ultra, probably the Intel with outdated OS is running smoother now.
