Mac OS 12.2 Monterey - Mail program auto-saving drafts in Draft Mailbox every minute or so, HOW DO I STOP IT??

I'm using Mac OS 12.2 Monterey on an M1 MacBook Pro computer. Most of my emails are using our Gmail account, but I do all of my reading, writing and storage of emails in the Mac Mail application. As I compose emails, a "copy" of my draft is put into my Drafts folder in my Apple Mail program. I might end up with 20 or 30 versions, progressively back in time, by the time I finish and send an email.

The Draft email folder that I am talking about is the "Gmail" folder under the "All Drafts" folder in the top group of folders or mailboxes labeled "Favorites".

Can I turn this "auto-save" function off, somehow? If so, how?

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Check in the Gmail settings. I have never seen such behavior from a true IMAP email account in Mail. I imagine it has something to do with the many idiosyncrasies of Gmail.

You could try setting the Drafts folder for Gmail to be locally stored on the Mac. Mail Permissions > Accounts (select Gmail) > Mailbox Behaviors.

Interesting! Testing seems to show that it is 100% a Mac Mail problem with nothing to do with Gmail or Hotmail or Yahoo, or "Me". While I'm composing a mail message, every minute or so, a copy of the draft goes into the Trash mail folder.

Extremely annoying!!! Last evening I composed a fairly long multi-paragraph email and there were over 40 progressive copies of it in my Trash folder!!!!

I have four active accounts on my Mac Mail application. They are iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail. Our primary email uses the Gmail service. When I compose a "Reply" to an incoming email, I have the issue. When I compose a "New" email, it goes out with my "me.com" email service. In both cases I get the multiple progressive versions in the TRASH folder.

I tested it on my iCloud email, as well, and it did the same thing. This morning I spent about an hour and a half composing a long email and when I went to my "Trash" folder in Mac Mail, I had over a hundred copies of my message, at varying states of completion.

I wish I could edit my original post, because like I said in a couple of replies above, the copies are showing up in the Trash folder, not the Deleted folder.
