OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.6 on MacBook Pro (late 2011)

So if my MacBook Pro (late 2011) has the OS X El Capitan, Version 10.11.16, and cannot be upgraded any further; Does this mean my MacBook is obsolete and I cannot continue to use it the way I want to and what I paid for? It works completely fine other than just needing to update the OS in order to keep using the apps that I need to. Would seem to be a shame to just throw it away.

A late 2011 MacBook Pro can be upgraded to High Sierra 10.13.6 but no later version. See: How to get old versions of macOS - Apple Support

That may be enough for you to use the apps that you need.

Never throw away a late 2011 Macbook Pro, you can enjoy a completely, new, up to date computing experience by installing a non Apple OS, such as, Chrome OS or Linux. I bought a mid 2007 Macbook Pro for about $45.00 US locally without a battery just to play with, with a somewhat defective Super Drive. The seller installed Chrome OS, so I could continue using it. Chrome OS is web based, not for me, so I began exploring Linux Mint which can run on very low spec. computers. My current desktop is a early 2008 iMac running El Capitan, still usable for what I require. You can run the newest version of Linux Mint 20.3, which is like running Big Sur or Monterey on a Mac. It would work very well on your MBP, I am looking for a newer MBP (2009-2011) locally to maximize my Linux experience. In the near future, Linux Mint shall probably become my main computer OS. Perfect combination of a superbly built MBP + a great Linux OS.
