Monterey 12.3 Broke The Mini-DV Connection

Prior to updating to 12.3 I was able to connect my Panasonic Mini-DV video camera with a DV --> Firewire and then firewire to thunderbolt to usb c adapters and import video from tapes into iMovie. Since updating to 12.3 iMovie no longer will recognize the camera as a device when going to import. I spent about two hours troubleshooting this with Applecare support with no solution. It appears the update has made it non-usable in this sense. I'm thinking an update to iMovie needs to be done to make this work again perhaps? At any rate, if anyone has experienced this and has a fix I'd love to hear it! Using a 2020 Macbook Air.

Many thanks for all your suggestions, The problem was the Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter bought from Amazon. I purchased an Apple cable from the Apple Store today and the camera is finally recognised. In this case spend more than triple the $ on an Apple original adapter.

In order to establish if your cables are not the problem, were you able to capture to iMovie with an OS prior to Monterey 12.3?

Monterey 12.4 was a fix for anyone using 12.3 or 12.3.1 ( both contained a bug preventing tape capture ) so if you were unable to capture using an OS prior to 12.3 then updating to 12.4 would not cure the issue as the problem would have been caused by something else such as connector cables perhaps.

iMovie was updated to 12.3.3 at the same time that Monterey 12.4 was issued so you might try updating to iMovie 12.3.3 .

Doubt it will cure your issue but at least you will have the latest iMovie version.

Try reverting to Big Sur.

You can re-install Big Sur on your Mac fairly easily without removing Monterey.

Create a new partition (volume) on your Mac using Disk Utility and install Big Sur on that.

You then open your Mac using the new partition.

Eventually if you want to remove the new partition . . .

Creating a new partition takes only a minute or so . . . installing Big Sur will take longer of course.

Back up any important data first.

Hi,

I don't recall seeing your issue reported on this forum related specifically to Monterey. Perhaps others who may have had the same problem will chime in.

You might try deleting/resetting iMovie preferences to see if that will trigger recognition. To delete preferences open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects.  Deleting preferences is a safe procedure that will not cause data loss or disruption to your project.

You can also try redownlloading iMovie.

If still no luck, try resetting the System Managemen Controller (but no longer available for the new M1 computers): It is a matter of booting up while holding down certain keys.

Sometimes starting the camera running before commencing the import will trigger recognition.

As a workaround, you can try using the Image Capture app on your Mac to import to your desktop instead of directly into iMovie. Also, you an try importing into the Photos app and then accessing the videos via the Photos app item in the iMovie media sidebar.

Here’s the link to Apple’s feedback site where you can report the issue.

Feedback - iMovie - Apple

If you keep a TimeMachine backup you can try restoring the earlier version of iMovie and see if that helps. (If you have accessed your iMovie library with the new version that would make it unaccessible to the earlier version. So you want to back up and keep the newer version.) However, the Mac itself is not recognizing the external camera, so it may be an operating system issue rather than confined to iMovie. If that’s the case you would need to revert back to the previous operating system. I think that the Finder help menu has instructions for that. Be sure and back up your present operating system before trying to revert to the old one. Might be good first to touch base with Apple support.

Same problem here on my M1 Mac Mini running 12.3. System info sees my Firewire DV devices, but Quicktime, iMovie, OBS can't see it.

Both show up just fine in Firewire System info.

They work just fine on my M1 Mac Book still on Big Sir.

Really hope this gets fixed so I am not stuck doing video work on my old Intel Mac Pro.
