Monterey 12.3 Broke The Mini-DV Connection

I can assure you it is an easy task when the external camera is detected. There has been a lot of activity on this problem and several users have made reports to Apple feedback. I am of the opinion there will be a "Fix" as this bug affects many and Apples release in March 2022 seems to indicate it is their intention to continue support.

Makes sense, I cannot believe they did that it in the first place.

Do you think it’s worth the hassle of calling Apple Care and reverting to the previous OS, and then just updating when Apple corrects the issue? I’m eager to get started..

Also, I wonder if all the backlash, they’ll do a Premiere update that allows us to capture miniDV with that program.

using iMovie to capture and importing those files will work but certainly not ideal..

With my limited experience I would only consider reverting to Big Sur as a last resort. I do several projects using my external camera and initially was very concerned it would not be fixed. However I now believe it has been recognised as a bug and a subsequent update will contain a fix. I doubt in 12.4 update soon to be released but shortly after. I am not sure what you mean by"using iMovie to capture etc". That is exactly what I do but iMovie no longer detects my camera?

I'm having the same issue. I was using Quicktime to capture audio tapes with a Canopus analog-to-digital converter. After updating to 12.3.1, I no longer see the Canopus among the input sources. Hope it's fixed soon.

I have AppleCare so I was actually on the phone with one the techs a couple nights ago for two and a half hours. He kept reassuring me that the update wasn’t the problem. Well after 2 and a half hours he was like, ****, yeah I guess reinstall Big Sur 🤷🏻. There was literally nothing else it could be.. we tried EVERYTHING

Same problem here! After updating to 12.3, FCP will no longer see my JVC DV cam over firewire, even though it's detected in system info. Keeping my fingers crossed that Apple will push out an update/fix soon so I don't have to mess around downgrading to Big Sur.

So I’m trying to revert to Big Sur and it’s a nightmare:

I backed up all my important stuff on an external HD and iCloud and am now trying to revert to the OS that came with my late 2019 iMac using internet based recovery. I'm doing everything right and getting nowhere.

I reboot holding option, command, shift, R and am then asked to choose a network. Then I enter my password and the first try, it stayed on that black screen with the password prompt with a spinning white and grey ball next to it for about 24 hours before I tried again last night. I woke up to it on the same page but it asking for the password again. An hour in this time and the ball is still spinning. Not sure what to do.. I tried AppleCare again and they said I'm doing everything right and I definitely have a good internet connection afaik soooo…

Is it too late to just go back to Monterey and put the DV deck back on eBay and abandon this project? This is SO infuriating!

I’m using a 2011 MacBook to capture and then just uploading to an external HD so I can edit on my iMac. Quite the hassle but it works. I wish I could capture with premiere, fcp, or QuickTime though ugh

The problem is not fixed. My Sony DCR TRV120 was working fine with transferring video into iMovie before the Monterey 12.3.1 update. Very frustrating. One day, perfection; next day, kaput. And I didn't even tell my iMac to perform the update!

When I called Apple Support the dude refused over and over to believe that the OS update was the issue. After over 2 hours of him trying to figure it out he gave up but still refused to believe the OS update was a problem..

Yes I’m the same with this problem, no mention of this in the update they released for iMacs etc, with so much tech and tapes to get done for filming, all jobs are on hold until a fix is released.

come on Apple please get this done ASAP.

I have just run into the same problem, I went to transfer more mini dv tapes over today and all of a sudden iMovie won't recognize the camera anymore and I have troubleshot everything I can think of and the only change I made was the upgrade to Monetary. Glad to hear someone else has a similar experience.

I also have a similar issue. I have a Panasonic NV DS60B camcorder and my MacBook Pro M1 running Monterey will not even recognise the camcorder when I have it connected up (let alone iMovie detecting it). I also had to buy the 2 x Apple adaptors (Firewire to thunderbolt and thunderbolt to USB-C), costing me in around £70, to no avail.

any suggestions will be welcome.

I'm going to have to try the partition method. I installed Catalina on an external bootable thumb drive that I created. But Catalina worked so slowly as to be unusable -- like 5 minutes between clicks.

Just updated my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020) 3.3 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5 to Monterey 12.4. Tested my connection to my Sony DCR TRV-17. Neither iMovie or Quicktime recognized the digital dv camera. About two weeks ago, I borrowed an older iMac with Firewire and it connected fine. It looks like the upgrade to 12.4 did not work for me.

Any suggestions?
