How can I check the firmware version of my G4 eMac and were could I find possible updates
Welcome!
Open System Profiler, probably in you utility folder. The opening screen should show info like boot ROM version and other hardware parameters.
Before considering any upgrades see this:
If you computer falls within one of that ranges, chances are high it will never work properly unless you do a complete logic board replacement. So many LBs have failed and replaced that finding a known good one today is virtually impossible.
An eMac with a 700 or 800mhz processor can run up to macOS 10.4 "Tiger." One with a faster processor (the fastest eMac was 1.42ghz) can run no higher OS than 10.5 "Leopard," now 13 years dead. You cannot get new apps that run on that OS.
Apple have not posted downloadable version of Tiger and Leopard so you must search the market for used, factory retail (universal) install CD sets. If your eMac does not have a SuperDrive, you must find set of CDs, not DVDs. Even harder today. Proper retail disks look like this:
The "Don'ts":
—The grey install/restore disks that came with another Mac don't work:
— downloaded versions, all pirated, don't work, and may have malware appended.
— burned disks don't work most of the time.
You have a hard battle before you. Hard-to-find OS disk, no apps available, chances of an eMac with fatal logic board issues...consider carefully why you want to do this before writing checks.

Here is a list of the latest firmware revisions. Apple no longer maintains this list after about macOS 10.13, but for your needs it should suffice.
