Siri and using it as a timer

I ask Siri to set timer for either 60 sec or 1 min. It carries out the task fine but always displays “15:00” when it finishes. I have tried to understand this logic but cannot figure out what and why of this. Yes, it keeps time accurately (i.e., concludes at 60 sec.)

Is this s bug or a feature and if the latter, please clue me in!

I think 15 minutes is just a default value. Normally, you never see that because that window isn't shown. When you start a timer, it has some non-default time. But in the edge case of actually watching the timer count down, when it hits zero, it shows the completed window with the original timer window below. The the original window has now been reset back to default instead of 00:00. I would consider it a bug, but I doubt it would ever get fixed.

Really weird.

Here in Italy, using my iPhone XR with iOS 15.4, invoking "Hey Siri" and asking to start a "XX seconds" timer, everything is okay. When the timer expires and I tap on the message, the message itself closes, and the timer app appears, showing "XX seconds" (evidently the latest used option).

No idea about your (or etresoft's) issue. In other words I can't replicate that behavior.

Have you figured our any rhyme or reason to this? I'm thinking their CODE here is not checking for and adjusting for time zones/locations and is using the default clock provided in most all code libraries for any time calculation. Let's see if I get any response having submitted this now as a bug. Likely nobody has bothered to report it (finding a way to report bugs is not an easy task for most users... that UX is pretty opaque all things considered... ; )

@Actually Human, and (Cc), etresoft & IdrisSeaBright

Buongiorno a tutti :)

Given that my iPhone is set for Italian language and region, I have tried to reproduce the situation you encounter, but I am unable to do so. Let's see if I can explain myself better, detailing all the steps of my procedure:

  1. The iPhone (XR running iOS 15.4, autolock display = 2 minutes, if relevant) is on the home page and all apps have been forcibly closed (no background apps are running).
  2. I use "Hey Siri" and ask to set the timer for 60 seconds
  3. Siri replies "Ho avviato il timer di un minuto" (I've started the one-minute timer), and the countdown begins (visible in the message at the top of the home page). After about 8-9 seconds the timer message on the top disappears and the phone stays on the home page.
  4. When the timer ends, the message on the top reappears, and I tap there to stop the sound.
  5. As soon as I touch it, the sound stops and the phone automatically opens the timer app, showing me 1 minute (the last choice made, as per this screenshot):

That's all.

Hmmm... but the report by the user in Italy saying it works differently for them would smash that theory...

Also, there is a display - the timer shows countdown the entire time it is doing its thing (not necessarily a window object but the countdown text is on the locked home screen so...)

I did report this and let's see what happens...

Still baffled...

Can you clarify what timer displays when it concludes a timing request for 60 sec.

To be exact here: Ask Siri to 'set timer for 60 sec.' When it dings and finishes, what precisely does the timer (open the app please and look at what's there) display? Does it display 00:00 as a digital stopwatch would or does it display 15:00?

Thanks for helping here.

Fascinating!

I am wondering if Apple FIXED this bug in the last LOCALIZED iOS update?

I did report this as a bug and included link to this discussion. Truly fascinating to me as I used to work as a UX/UI designer and engineer for Apple and now I teach this subject matter area as a professor.

Next step I would want to take is to find out whether either UX is same in iOS localized for other languages…

Also wondering if there is an iOS database of specifically release notes that can be searched. Anyone know? Would this be done via the developer kit/network??

No. This bug is not fixed in 15.4.
