Initials instead of names in MESSAGES

Beginning today, messages from my friends that used to show their name now simply has their initials as to the sender of the message

what happened

We'd like to start with asking a few questions to help us determine the best solution. Do you recall making any changes to your device software, or settings? In particular, any changes to your Contacts or Messages settings?

Are your contacts stored in iCloud or are they from another account? Would you please let us know what model iPhone and iOS version you're experiencing this issue on? This is in Settings > General > About.

Thank you so much for responding. My contacts are both in Google apps and in iCloud, and were mirrored if that is the right word from my iPhone to my new iPad ninth generation when it arrived a couple of days ago. Only yesterday did I notice that instead of a text message name l label that read Susan Ross, it had an S. R. only. This was happening on all my text message contact labels.

I found that very strange as it was something new and not desired.

After a little research on my own, I discovered that I could go into settings and uncheck nicknames and short names or something along those lines.

However, both on my iPad and on my iPhone, there are still instances where the S. R. appears rather than Susan Ross.
