On iPad, using Excel - how do I merge cells?

Copying multiple cells results in one cell I want to combine the data in two separate spreadsheets. I copied the desired cells in Spreadsheet A but when I pasted in Spreadsheet B all the data was in one huge cell. Same thing if I highlight by rows or columns. What's going on?
