Apple TV slow over Hughesnet satellite connection

I run an Apple TV version A1625 (NOT 4k) over a Hughesnet Gen 5 Satellite Internet connection, claimed 25 Mbps Download / 5 Upload typically closer to 10-15 MB download. Zoom conferences are very clear as they are prioritized by Hughes. HBOMax streaming works fine (as an app through the Apple TV hardware) but Apple TV+ was failing to load, getting errors indicating bandwidth or speed issues. I went to Settings, Video and Audio, and Resolution and changed to 720p from 1080p at 60 Hz. Apple TV+ content (Last Days of Ptolemy Grey) began loading after failing twice before.

I suspect that changing the resolution may have reduced the resolution size requested back to the Apple TV+ server from the Apple TV hardware at my house, which allowed it to work on a slower connection. Just a guess.

I will say that at my house with Verizon 1 Gbps fiber (different house) that typically averages around 700 Mbps actual download speed (I am sure Verizon is cheating out on their SONET connections to the Tier 1 Internet....but I digress different problem) I have run an Apple TV4K (two of them) on two different Sony OLED screens, an XR-A8J and an XR-A8H similar models a few months apart in age. I have zero problems running Apple TV or any app, even with 4k content, even multiple streams at once on both units, so I suspect your problems are that the Apple TV device or Apple TV service may need more bandwidth than perhaps we wish it would, or maybe their algorithms are not as advanced as what HBO or Netflix does. I know Netflix you can actually create a different user profile and spec a different bandwidth speed or resolution to work better on low bandwidth providers.

As of 2022 I would say anything below 500 Mbps is really not appropriate for any house with multiple smartphones, computers, streaming devices including Apple TV, and of course you need a router capable of handling multiple users with bandwidth intensive applications like audio or video streaming services.

Apple TV+ in 1080p HD SDR should use about 5–7 Mbps average, 8–12 Mbps peak.

That is correct. Apple TV will request the set resolution, or the next higher available, as that saves bandwidth over downscaling on the device.
