iMessage vs sms/mms

What does it mean if I send a friend texts and sometimes they’re blue and sometimes they’re green, but he doesn’t have an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac and never has had any of there product? He can’t see the iMessages on his phone, so where are they going and how can he find out who is accessing them and what number or email is tied to him?
