Ibooks and Pdf files

I have 2 questions concerning ibooks app. I have a 2nd gen itouch with os 4 installed. When in itunes and you click on the book tab, it shows 1 book. Is that what is in the Ibook app and if you sync is it only syncing what's in Ibooks? Second question what are the steps needed to get a pdf book into the Ibook app? Thanks in advance for any and all help.
