I have an iMac 21.5 inch, late 2013, running High Sierra 10.13.6 (I know, I know). I think it's not compatible with Monterey. Can/should I update it to an earlier MacOS? How?

You can upgrade up to Catalina 10.15.7

IF you have older versions of critical apps, you may wish to upgrade no farther than 10.14 Mojave. Starting with Catalina, older 32-bit software would not run at all. That means older versions of expensive apps like Office and Adobe CS will be dead in the water.

An "earlier" version would be one older than Catalina. Is that what you want to do?
