Migration Assistant, Hard drive partitions and failure of time machine

I recently tried to migrate from my older iMac late-2014 to a newer 2019 MBP using the migration assistant. It looked like everything transferred to the MBP, but now the MBP won't run time machine. I think it has to do with the formatting of the iMac hard drive and the naming of the partitions.

And in fact, I think my iMac partitions are messed up. I am enclosing several screen shots. Somehow I have Macintosh HD, Macintosh HD - data AND Macintosh HD - data - data. Something isn't right.

Anyone got any advice?

Hello JamesENicholson,

Thank you for reaching out about Time Machine not backing up as expected after using Migration Assistant. The HD showing that it is using 15.38GB, is your macOS Recovery system built into the Mac. The 1.47 TB being used on the HD is where you transfered the data from the old Mac to the new. How many Users do you see when logging in after powering on? Are you receiving a specific error when attempting to use Time Machine? Are you attempting to backup to an external hard drive with an appropriate file type?
