keyboard with umlaut and other special characters

I'm using a macAir 13" with M1 BigSur. Until yesterday, if I pressed longer on "a", a special character window appears (just like on the iPhone keyboard) and I could choose one from them, for example the ä. (I'm using hungarian keyboard but often I also need to use a german characters). Since yesterday I can't open this special character window by pressing longer on "a". Maybe I made some mistakes, but I don't know what?

I would appreciate if someone could help me to get this function back... Thx a lot!

Did you install any antivirus stuff, like webroot? It can mess with this feature.

Try this:

open Terminal and type

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool true

and then restart.

In your system preferences > keyboard > input sources, do you just have one item on the list, Hungarian? If more than one, what are they?

Does the a now repeat when you press and hold it?

You can also make ä via Option u, then a.

In the list there is also German. If I press and hold "a", it repeats and the menu with special characters doesn't appears...

As I wrote, it worked recently, but since two or three days it's not and I don't know what did I wrong...
