how do I go from Sierra to a newer version
Im running Sierra on my Mac, What version can I go up to or is my computer too old
Well, there's no way for anyone here to know how old your computer is.

To see exactly which Mac you have, go to the Apple Menu > About This Mac, then Check compatibility > hardware requirements in the link dialabrain posted. That will tell you which OS you can upgrade to.
