Google requires completing authentication in your web browser.

I've just done the macOS upgrade (as advised by apple) but now a few of my mail accounts have little ''not linked'' icons next to them. When I click on the 'circle with a little wavy line) a message pops up saying: enter the PW for the account XX Google requires completing authentication in your web browser.

TWO options 1)cancel 2) Open Browser, when I click 2 another block appears and there is a whirring circle, but NOTHING happens?? Please advise how to get this reconnected?

I've already quit mail and restarted it - nothing changes

I've already logged into these various accounts via google and safari but still nothing happens in mail

Please advise how to sort.

I had the same problem of a persistent message "Google requires completing authentication in your web browser" after changing my password for one of my gmail accounts.

A web search on this phrase brings up many possible solutions. I tried the easy ones such as deleting the email account and adding it again, restarting etc. to no avail.

What eventually worked for me was to make Safari my default browser and delete all the cookies in Safari (Safari -> Preferences -> Privacy -> Manage Website Data -> Remove All) and then add the gmail account back and follow the prompts.

You can then change the default browser back again if you want to.

I hope this helps someone.

If Mail on your Mac keeps asking for your password

Mail might say that it can't connect to your email account, and repeatedly ask you to enter the password for it.

If your Mac is connected to the Internet but suddenly starts asking for your password, you should generally try again later, and if necessary work with your email provider to resolve. If you're using Apple's iCloud Mail, learn how to resolve issues with iCloud Mail.

Why is Mail asking for your password?

Mail asks for your password when it is connecting to your email provider, but can't connect to your email account because your email provider isn't accepting your email password.

Your email provider may reject your password for several reasons, including:

  • You're not using your current email password. If you updated the password on another device, make sure that you're using the same password on your Mac.
  • Your email provider needs you to update or reset your password for security reasons. For example, if you're using Google’s two-step verification, your Gmail account in Mail requires the appropriate app-specific password.
  • Your email provider deactivated or suspended your account. Contact your email provider for help.
