Contact photo keeps changing….How do I stop it

I added a photo to a contact and saved it. When I went to message that person there was a different image (note a photo of a person) and it is not an image I have saved or ever seen before. I went to the contact and changed it to the person photo, deleted the photo and saved it. I went back to send a message and that same random photo was back. I have deleted it several times. If I select a different contact then go back to the one I just edited, the random photo is back event though I have deleted it multiple times. How do I get it to stop doing this?

things I checked….

I am running the current iOS

My friend is also using an iPhone

this only happens once in a while, it does not happen with most contacts

i have made these changes on my iPad and iPhone and have gotten the same effect

Hi trapezeboy,

Based on what you're experiencing, the contact this is happening for may have set the photo for their contact details on their end, for what they want to display to others. This is how they would set that up:

"Your name and photo can be shared with anyone using iMessage, but you'll be asked to confirm that you want to share with someone when sending or replying to a new message. You can also turn sharing on and off." More about this feature can be found here under the section 'Change your name and photo': Use Messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Check with your friend to see if that's the photo they set up their contact information with. If not, to help isolate this further, let us know if this is only happening with one contact or specific contacts. Did you see a prompt to update the name and photo?
