Three dots - not wifi, no cellular

Suddenly today my iPhone 12 Pro shows three dots next to the battery indicator - no WIFI, no 5G, just three dots. I noticed on two phone calls today the calls blacked out for a time, then returned. One dropped completely but I did not look at the screen when this happened to notice if the dots were there. I noticed it when attempts to send iMessages failed.

I use Verizon service, but is this relevant since it seemed to drop both WIFI and cellular?

I have never seen this before.

Thanks for any ideas.
