How to reconnect My Book to my 2021 iMac

I received this message today on my 2021 24-inch iMac. I ejected My Book, unplugged the USB from the back of the computer, then plugged the USB back into the computer. Then I restarted the computer. I went to disk utility and chose connect My Book. Then I received a disk utility message saying it cannot connect. I've tried this several times, with no luck. Now when I go to disk utility, My Book does not show up at all. Do I need to replace My Book with a more current external hard drive? I've had this one since 2009.
