Transferring from old to new iPad - What Apple ID do I use? (family sharing)

Hi. I bought an iPad in 2017 and my son and I shared it for a few years. I bought it for myself originally and set it up under my own Apple ID but as he got older he used it more and more and I didn't. I would just download apps for him, buy in-app purchases for games when he wanted them. A few months ago I discovered family sharing so I created his own Apple ID and password and logged myself out the iPad and logged him in using his own Apple ID login. I could then authorise payments using my iPhone if he wanted to make in-app purchases which is much easier and what I probably should have done years ago had I known about it.

I have since bought him a brand new iPad purely for his use and was in the process of transferring everything from my old iPad to his new iPad using iTunes. At the setup stage on the new iPad it's asking me to login with an Apple ID. What Apple ID do I use? My one that that I used for years on the old iPad (and still use on my iPhone), or his new Apple ID I created for family sharing? I don't want anything of mine on his new iPad but I downloaded many of his apps under my Apple ID, will that matter?

I hope this makes sense!! Any help appreciated, thank you.

If, as the family organiser, you have enabled App sharing within Family Sharing, Apps purchased under your own AppleID should be available to family members. That said, some Apps and associated in-App purchases cannot be shared.

During setup of the new iPad, you should sign-in with the AppleID of the user who uses the device. This will ensure that only data relating to the signed-in AppleID account is synchronised with the device from iCloud.

If using an existing iPad as the transfer source, locally stored data present on the source device will be copied to the new iPad. Providing that you exercised appropriate data hygiene when you passed ownership of your old iPad to your son, nome of your data should be present.

Ok thank you. What I have noticed from using the old iPad is he can’t update the apps when he is logged in under his AppleID. To update it asks me to login again but his AppleID and password don’t work so I have to login to the App Store using my AppleID for the updates to download?? Is that a family sharing issue or because a lot of the apps were originally downloaded via my AppleID? If so is there anything I can do about that or does it just mean for any app update I still need to login to do them?

So if I setup his new iPad using his own AppleID does that mean he won’t be able to update the apps?

Thank you I will look into enabling app sharing. I can’t see this explained anywhere in those links you gave , if I buy something that I wouldn’t want my son having access to, can I still control that or will it automatically download onto his iPad because I’ve enabled sharing? I would still want some control over what I buy for myself not being able to be accessed by my son or taking up unnecessary space on his iPad.

Sorry another question re this. I’ve managed to setup the new iPad using my sons Apple ID however to update the apps I have to sign in to the App Store using my Apple ID and password. I assume this is because 99% of the apps where purchased using my Apple ID. Is it safe to leave myself logged into the App Store on his iPad while he is actually signed in under his own Apple ID? If that makes sense.

If you remain signed-in to the App Store using your own AppleID on your son’s device, whilst nothing prevents you from doing so, you will defeat all the controls introduced using Family Sharing.

In this configuration, any Apps that are purchased are recorded as having been purchased by you - and not your son. Similarly, all App downloads will effectively be made be you, using your AppleID.
