Since purchase, my iPhone 12 iCloud backup fails, despite only 39,24 MB of 5 GB shown as used.
I tried to reset my device, etc. but the device does no iCloud backup, and I keep getting the message that my device's backup failed.
What can I do? The next Apple store is a day's travel away...

5GB is not much for a backup.
Upgrade to 50GB and try again.

For 3,9 GB to back up, I need more than 5 GB? That sounds irrational.
Then backup to a computer is the best option without being pressured into paying for an irrational service requirement.

I don't store photos, videos or music on my device, so 5GB should be far more than sufficient. I also don't download video games or software.

Incorrect, you need more than that.
Nobody is pressurising you, you can back up to a computer for free.
It will cost you less than €1 to find out if I'm right.

It will help those who find it equally hard to believe that 3,9 GB of data won't fit into a 5 GB storage facility.
You really think you can backup 4GB on top of another 4GB backup with only 1GB working storage?

Indeed, I really think Apple would be clever enough to only update what has changed, instead of backing up an entirely dataset every time. That would be most peculiar.
