You have to unpair from your Apple ID.
Unpair AirPods
What ended up working for us was that I had to forget the air pods pro on my phone first, then on her phone too. After that I went to Find My app and made sure they were forgotten there. The next morning we tried using the air pods with my daughters phone and they were no longer linked. Not sure if it was waiting a day or forgetting them in all the devices and apps that worked.
Thank you- but I did that and when my daughter tries to connect the forgotten air pods on her iPhone it still says it belongs to me. Should I forget them on every device I own?
my case is the opposite, I replaced my phone with a new one but I get notifications saying I'm carrying my daughter's AirPods with me. they were/are mine, they are connected to all my devices but since I got a new phone it now get notifications saying I'm carrying someone else's AirPods with me.
Then it was not unpaired correctly.
Tap Forget This Device. This removes the AirPods from all the devices where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID.
