[Apple TV] Amazon Prime Video "Internet Connectivity Problem" w/ Config IP > "Automatic"

A few nights ago, Amazon Prime Video app started failing to start up in my tv 4K, saying "Internet Connectivity Problem." After some trials and errors, I found when the tv’s network config was switched to “Manual” and set with the same IP’s and mask it had been getting from the DHCP, the Prime app started up no problem. And if I switched it back to the “Automatic,” the Prime failed again. I repeated these config changes, and the outcomes were consistent. And the issue does not happen with any apps I have on my tv. Since I have a workaround, it’s more of curiosity, but does anyone know what the issue is?

Apple TV 4K, tvOS 15

Thanks for putting me down the right path. This issue has been vexing me for a bit and I wasn’t finding any threads about it until I found this one.

I tried changing from automatic to manual, and then changing the IP address of the Apple TV itself, neither helped.

What did finally work for me though was I noticed in the DNS info on the Apple TV that it was seeing both the default gateway IP (the router) and the DNS server I have my router set to (1.1.1.1). So, I changed the DNS setting to manual and forced it to look to the default gateway IP address only. Soon as I did that the Prime app suddenly came back to life, even with the rest of my network setting set to automatic DHCP.

So weird, because it’s ultimately using the same DNS, it’s just didn’t like bypassing the router for DNS.

Thank you to everyone who posted helpful tips on this thread. Hopefully Amazon Prime developers find this and resolve the issue with their app.

Hi, I faced the exact same issue. This started few days back after I shifted my internet connection to NBN. Along with the new connection I got a new Router from the ISP and its after this that I started to notice that I was having issues with Prime video when every other service seemed to be working fine. I did the usual as advised on so many websites listed below.

  1. Restart Apple Tv
  2. Restart router
  3. Remove hdmi and power cables and restart after a minute
  4. Uninstall prime and reinstall.
  5. Remove from registered devices through amazon login and then re-add.
  6. I did not want to connect them (router and apple tv) with a cable so I left that option out

None of the above worked and then proceeded to below.

  1. Came across this thread and read some more replies below
  2. Checked gateway under network settings in Apple tv and noticed it was getting an IPV6 address in addition to the IPV4 addess.
  3. Accessed the web login for my router and Disabled IPV6 on my router

Once I did made the change on my router. I restarted the apple TV and checked the gateway. It had only the IPV4 address. Opened prime and everything working fine.

Thanks to all the other contributors for guiding to find the right solution.

Best regards

Phil

I checked a couple of things last night.

1) I remember some of posters here suggested changing the Config DNS from “Automatic” to “Manual” resolved their issue, keeping the Config IP to “Automatic”. And I confirm it resolves my issue as well. When I had the DNS set to “Automatic”, it was showing IPv6 DNS address next to an IPv4 DNS address. Once I switch it to “Manual”, it shows only the IPv4 DNS and Prime Video app can communicate with its server. From this, I guess our problem is very likely caused by the app’s IPv6 name resolution issue, as some has already suggested.

2) Someone here mentioned tv Prime Video app ver.1.2.9 fixed their issue. I updated mine, but the version still caused the same issue. I don’t think Amazon has fixed their problem just yet.

This was my issue, mostly. In my router I had added a local IP (a Pi-hole) as the default DNS to be used, and that was broadcast to the Apple TV as well. The Apple TV showed “local DNS IP, router IP” as the DNS addresses. However, my Pi-hole has been offline for a while, so that IP wasn’t assigned to anything at the moment. So, presumably Prime Video is directly querying DNS based on those values, as opposed to having tvOS resolve domains or asking tvOS for the DNS address to use. After removing that dead IP from my router and restarting the Apple TV, Prime Video works again like a charm.

Check your DNS settings of the router!

Internet Services Providers (ISP) will set their equipment to point their DNS servers. More advanced or privacy concerned users will change those settings to the likes of Cloudfare (1.1.1.1) etc.

To prove the theory correct here are the steps used;

Delete Prime Video App

Reinstalled Prime Video App

Still no Internet

Changed router DNS from 1.1.1.1 to 8.8.8.8, restated router with updated DNS settings

Prime App was already open on Apple TV 4K and as soon as the router restarted Prime App worked instantly

Logged into Prime App with valid account

Changed router back to 1.1.1.1 and the Prime App continued to work.

I started having this problem when I changed routers in the house to a set of TP Link Deco x90 mesh routers. It doesn't happen until I configure the network to run with ipv6 enabled. I have verified this with 2 different ISP's (Rise broadband and Starlink).

I don't have a resolution yet, other than to turn ipv6 support off on the routers. I'm still working on it, and will post an update when I get one, but I think it has to do with how the Prime app is being directed inside Amazon's network with ipv6 enabled.

Big thank you to KMKazie. I was ready to switch to Manual IP config as he/she suggested, but before that I have decided to switch from my WiFi extender to the primary router. Lo and behold, the moment I switched, a new IP address popped on the screen and I was prompted to re-register my Amazon app. Still don't understand why the Amazon app would not work through WiFi extender (all other apps like Netflix, YouTub, etc worked perfectly) but the issue has been resolved.

This worked for me, very odd. First, all other apps worked just fine. Prime wold say it had internet connectivity issues (in a bunch of languages ) and require me to kill the app to get out. This started to happen with Prime after months of working. I set DNS to manual, entered the IP address of my router (which is what the Automatic DNS setting already set it to) and Prime works properly.
